The San Francisco 49ers have given their kicking team the boot.
Yesterday — the team waived starting punter Jason Baker and
former starting place kicker Jose Cortez after sub-par performances in recent weeks.
Baker — a second-year pro out of Iowa — had the lowest net punting average in the N-F-L this season at 32 yards. One of his short kicks was returned for a 76-yard touchdown in Monday night´s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Cortez lost his starting job to rookie Jeff Chandler after missing a game-winning field goal for the second straight week in a loss to San Diego. Chandler made his only field goal try against the Eagles — a 35-yarder.
The Niners had planned to keep Cortez. But an injury to safety Ronnie Heard meant the team needed his slot for a replacement. Safety Jason Moore was signed to fill in for Heard and take Cortez´ roster spot.
The team didn´t immediately replace Baker.
