Three people are under investigation for allegedly bilking $650,000 out of more than 300 Home Depot stores in 23 states.
The San Jose Mercury News today reports that Anthony Davenport, Linda Broderick and John Hay were arrested in San Leandro and are being held in the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. All three are Irish immigrants believed to be members of the nomadic group, the Travelers.
Authorities say the three replaced the bar codes on expensive items to make them cheaper. They allegedly returned the items for full refunds of the real price. Police say they would then receive store credit and use the credit to buy gift cards. They would ultimately sell the gift cards for a discount to unknowing buyers.
They were arrested in June after allegedly trying to scam a Home Depot in Milpitas.
