Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested a secretary from Tuolumne Elementary School on charges of embezzlement and grand theft. Detective John Walker took Lori Wilkinson, 44, from Modesto into custody at her Trask Lane home.
Part of her duties as the principal’s secretary included bookkeeping and handling deposits for various fundraisers and student funds. School officials contacted the Sheriff’s Department when they noticed that some money was missing from a recent school carnival fundraiser. Modesto City School Administrators did an audit of several accounts that Wilkinson was responsible for and have so far discovered more than thirteen-thousand-dollars missing from these accounts.
District officials have discovered the missing funds from at least 30 different funding events. “Funds from the school book fair, tee shirt sales, pencil sales, cheerleader car wash, carnivals, and money from the 6th grade outdoor education camp have been identified as being missing,” said Walker. “We are still looking into the possibility that there may be money missing from more accounts.”
Wilkinson was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center and was released after posting a $10,000 bond.
