Republican Bill Simon and incumbent Gray Davis are set to meet at noon today for their first and probably only gubernatorial debate before the November elections. Simon, a Republican, will face off with Democratic Governor Davis in an hour-long debate sponsored by the Los Angeles Times in downtown Los Angeles. The lunchtime duel marks the first time that Davis and Simon appear together since Simon won the GOP nomination in March to challenge Davis. Statewide polls show neither candidate is popular with voters. Davis has struggled to recover from the state’s energy crisis and Simon’s campaign has suffered from a series of controversies surrounding his family business.
It will be replayed on AM 1450 KVML starting at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
