Oakland airport officials say four men of Middle Eastern descent removed from an America West flight Thursday night sparked suspicion by buying one-way tickets with cash. An F.B.I. spokeswoman says the men also switched seats after boarding the Phoenix-bound flight. The agency released the men after questioning and America West put them up overnight in a hotel before flying them to Phoenix on Friday morning.
Rosemary Barnes, spokeswoman for Oakland International Airport, says both the flight crew and federal air marshals thought the men were suspicious. The men´s identities were not released because they were not charged with any crime.
