A Los Angeles County woman may be the first person in the Western United States to have contracted West Nile virus. Authorities say preliminary lab tests were positive. Results of further tests won´t be known for another week. Authorities won´t identify the woman but they say she was hospitalized last month with a mild case of meningitis. She has recovered from that illness. Meningitis is associated with the West Nile virus. Officials are awaiting test results on three other people who might have contracted the potentially deadly illness.
