Transit Drivers To Get A Break Or Two
Public transit districts would have to give their drivers the same meal and rest breaks as private bus companies under a bill headed for the governor´s desk. Private transit operators are required to give their drivers a half hour meal break and two shorter rest breaks during their shifts. But public transit agencies don´t have that requirement. The bill´s author, Assemblyman Paul Koretz of West Hollywood, says some drivers are forced to wear adult diapers to get through their workdays, he said. Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg of Los Angeles says the bill would provide simple justice. But Assemblywoman Helen Thomson of Davis says the question of driver breaks should be worked out in union contract negotiations. The Assembly voted 42 to 29 Saturday to approve Senate amendments to the bill, sending it to Governor Davis.
