Jurors in San Jose are expected to begin deliberations today in the trial of Yosemite killer Cary Stayner. In closing arguments yesterday, Stayner´s lawyer told jurors her client was not a sophisticated cold-blooded murderer. Rather, she said, he was a bumbling, psychotic murderer, unable to control his urges.
Defense lawyer Marcia Morrissey said Stayner was too addled by mental illness to intentionally kill. Stayner has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to killing three Yosemite National Park tourists. If Stayner is convicted of first-degree murder and found sane, he could face the death penalty.
