Training Pays Off For San Jose Woman

A 19-year-old mentally disabled woman used recent self-reliance classes to thwart an assault. San Jose police say the woman was waiting at a bus stop last week when a man sat down beside her. They say he fondled her and pushed her toward a dry creek bed. The woman called her independent-living teacher on her cell phone. She whispered that she was in danger and gave clues to her location. Her instructor called police. Officers spotted the woman and her suspected assailant, 29-year-old Aristeo Acosta Vega. Vega now faces four felony sexual assault and false imprisonment charges.

The woman´s mother says her daughter has been in the independent living program for about seven months. She had only become comfortable taking the bus alone in the last few weeks.
