The University of California, Merced could one day have an Ernest and Julio Gallo School of Management. The Gallo family and E-and-J Gallo Winery are offering to donate a $5 million “challenge gift” to be matched with oher donations to raise a $10 million endowment for the management school. The donation by the world´s largest winery would be the second-largest contribution to the Merced campus. Winery co-president Joseph Gallo says the school should not only educate leaders, but improve the Central Valley´s business climate. The university is scheduled to open in the fall of 2004. Ernest Gallo and the late Julio Gallo opened their winery at the end of Prohibition and in the middle of the Depression in 1933. It was successful from the start.
