At least one person is dead and six others injured, four seriously, after a head-on collision at the intersection of Highway 108 and Highway 49 this afternoon.
It took three helicopters and an ambulance to transport the injured from the scene. Four victims were being flown by Medi-Flight to Memorial Hospital in Modesto, and two with minor injuries were being taken to Tuolumne General Hospital for treatment.
The highway patrol is investigating the cause. No names have been released as of this time. The occupants of the mini van were trapped inside the vehicle for a time.
The crash between a Dodge four-door sedan and a mini van brought traffic in both directions to a stand still shortly after 3 p.m. this afternoon. Westbound traffic is still being diverted onto highway 49 at Montezuma junction. Eastbound traffic was being allowed to turn around back to Highway 120 to get around the scene.
