Stanislaus County deputies are asking people who made a credit card purchase at the Riverbank Shell station in the past several months to check their accounts.
32-year-old assistant manager Teresa McElwain is jailed on theft and fraud charges, after several customers found unauthorized charges. Officers say McElwain stole numbers from at least 80 customers and made fraudulent purchases with them. They´d like to hear from anyone else who may have been victimized.
Investigators say McElwain had an elaborate identity theft workshop in her home, including laptop computers, color printers and scanners. They say they found evidence of fake identification cards and notebooks containing people´s personal information. If you made a purchase inside the store with a credit or debit card, you could be vulnerable. Deputies say credit card purchases made directly at the pump would not be involved.
Deputies say McElwain´s husband was arrested on similar charges June 4th at their Modesto home.
