Thunderstorms swept through the Lake Tahoe Basin yesterday, igniting at least eight fires. None of the fires burned near homes or structures. Most involved single trees and a small surrounding area. But Forest Service officials say if rain hadn´t accompanied the lightning, things could have been much worse. Conditions are very dry in the Lake Tahoe area, and fire restrictions have been put in place at the national forest.
Firefighters are on the highest alert throughout the weekend. Fire restrictions are also in place in the Stanislaus and Eldorado National Forests, and crews are keeping a close watch on the skies for dry lightning in the Mother Lode.
