Two people were injured, one seriously, in a head-on collision on Tuolumne Road near Lambert Lakes Road in Sonora just before 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
Highway Patrol officers say 20 year-old Joseph Opie of Sonora possibly fell asleep while traveling northbound on Tuolumne Road, allowing his Dodge pickup to drift into the on-coming lane and hit a mail delivery Jeep driven by 44 year-old William Gellaspie of Murphys.
Eastbound traffic in the area was backed up to Highway 108 at the Junction shopping center.
According to an unidentified Post Office employee at the scene Gellaspie is a rural carrier working out of the Main Sonora Post Office on South Washington Street. He apparently was off-duty at the time of the accident.
The CHP reports the right-side-drive mail delivery Jeep was not equipped with seat belts.
Gellaspie suffered major injuries and was taken by Medi-Flight helicopter to Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
Opie was taken to Sonora Community Hospital with moderate injuries.
