Non Union Construction Workers Against Governor’s UC Merced Plan
Local non-union construction organizations are incensed over Governor Gray Davis´ proposal to support a union-backed Project Labor Agreement that would exclude non-union labor from working on the new University of California campus in Merced.
The Coalition For Fair Employment in Construction has paid for five billboards along Highways 99 and J-59, calling for Central Valley Residents to call the governor to express opposition to the agreement.
Coalition officials say non-union workers can apply for work at the site but must pay for union health care benefits and membership dues, even though they are not in the union. The UC Board of Regents are expected to vote on the agreement Wednesday at the UCLA campus.
