State Advisors Want To Allow Human Cloning To Help Sick

A state advisory committee is recommending that California lawmakers allow human cloning to help the sick, but ban it if making babies is the goal.

The California Legislature banned reproductive cloning in 1997, but that law is set to expire next year. The committee´s 49-page report recommends making that ban permanent while allowing for so-called therapeutic cloning, which many say is immoral.

The 12-member committee unanimously concluded that the technology offers potential medical and scientific benefits, and doesn´t raise many of the same concerns as human reproductive cloning.
