All nine employees taken hostage by a robber at a bank in Alhambra have been released or escaped unharmed. The last employees of the Cathay Bank escaped shortly before 4 p.m. Others had been released during negotiations with police. Police say the robber was left alone in the bank. It began at about 9:25 Tuesday morning when a man in his 30´s entered the bank on North Atlantic Avenue, told employees he was armed and demanded 50 thousand dollars. No customers were in the bank at the time.
Bank employees gave him some money and then triggered a silent alarm. Police surrounded the bank within minutes, trapping the robber inside. A four block area surrounding the bank, about 16 miles east of Los Angeles, was cordoned off and nearby residents and shopkeepers were evacuated.
