Oakland Raider defensive star Darrell Russell remains in jail today awaiting arraignment on sexual assault charges. Prosecutors in Alameda County say the player suspended most of the past season was arrested yesterday with two other men. Russell remained in jail today with bail set at
one-point-two million dollars.
Held in Alameda for investigation of drugging and sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman were the 25-year-old Russell, 24-year-old Naeem Perry of Berkeley and 27-year-old Ali Hayes of
Oakland. They have not been formally charged, but Alameda police said Russell would be charged with seven counts of rape.
Russell was the second player taken in the 1997 pro football player draft after the defensive tackle played in college at the University of Southern California. Russell is currently serving a one-year suspension from playing for the Raiders for testing positive for the drug Ecstasy.
