A police pursuit in eastern Los Angeles County ended with officers´ gunshots critically wounding a suspect they believed was armed. Police say the chase began around 6 pm last night in South Gate, when officers tried to pull over a suspected drunken driver.
During a chase lasting about one hour, authorities tried several times to stop the car with a spike strip. On the third try, one of the car´s tires blew out and the car was forced to a stop in an alley in Norwalk.
Sheriff´s deputy Rick Varela says a South Gate police officer and a sheriff´s deputy opened fire after the suspect jumped into the back seat and appeared to be arming himself. But the Sheriff´s Department said today that NO weapon was found in the car.
The wounded man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed today in critical condition.
