Guardsman Behind Bars For LAX Bomb Scare
An Army National Guardsman remains behind bars after allegedly trying to pass a security checkpoint at L.A.
International Airport with an explosive device in his bag. FBI spokesman Matthew McLaughlin says 32 year old Jacques Baker of Guam is expected to be charged today in L.A. federal court. Baker flew alone into Los Angeles early yesterday from Honolulu and was bound for Sacramento when the device was found in his luggage. Because the item resembled an M-80 firecracker, the screener notified authorities.
A Los Angeles police bomb squad was called to investigate. McLaughlin identified the device as a seal bomb, typically used by fishermen to scare away seals from prime fishing areas. No evacuations were ordered, and no flights were delayed.
