A self-proclaimed “angel of death´´ for elderly hospital patients pleaded guilty today to six counts of first-degree murder, and one count of attempted first-degree murder. The plea bargain in Los Angeles for Efren Saldivar allows him to avoid the death penalty.
In court today the 32-year-old Saldivar agreed to seven consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. He will be formally sentenced on April 17th.
The deaths of six patients between the ages of 75 and 87 occurred when he was a respiratory therapist in suburban Glendale.
The 32-year-old Saldivar was the target of investigation in the deaths of dozens of elderly patients beginning in 1996 and 1997.
The tall, heavy-set Saldivar´s responses were nearly inaudible, as he answered “guilty´´ to each count before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lance Ito.
