Federal agents say scam artists who staged naturalization ceremonies cheated immigrants who wanted to become citizens out of as much as $25,000.00 each.
At least one fake ceremony in Los Angeles included questions about American history, and a person in a black robe posing as a judge.
The accused ringleader and a second suspect have been charged with impersonating federal judges. Four people face numerous charges, including selling Social Security cards for $750.00 each.
According to court papers, one suspect posing as a judge forgot the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and had to be assisted by an immigrant.
