Standoff Ends After Night-Long Seige

San Jose police took a man into custody early today, nearly eleven hours after a woman was critically wounded and the standoff began.

Police spokesman Randy Torres said the 55-year-old wounded woman was taken to San Jose Medical Center for surgery, after she was shot in the upper torso. She was listed in critical condition today.

During a standoff that began at 5:45 p-m yesterday, the 58-year-old man called police saying his wife shot herself. He surrendered about 4:30 a-m.

The wounded woman was found on the front lawn of the home when officers arrived. A weapon was found nearby.

About 30 officers surrounded the home through the night-long standoff. The neighborhood was NOT evacuated.

San Jose Police Sergeant Joseph Deras said officers had previously been called to the home.
