Afternoon traffic was a mess in the Sonora area Thursday.
A solo crash on Highway 108 at Jenness Road just before 1 p.m. had emergency units responding.
Malfunctioning highway signal lights and railroad crossing arms snared homeward bound traffic at the intersection of Highway 108 at The Junction shopping center. The rail crossings blocked the Tuolumne Road crossing shortly after 4 p.m.
Police and highway patrol units directed cars through the area while the Sierra Railroad fixed the problem with the crossing gates. Traffic was backed up in the eastbound lanes past Timber Hills shopping center on Mono Way.
A stalled VW van in the center turn lane of Highway 108 on the curve near the Peppery snarled traffic in that area for a time, as well.
