Attorneys for the man accused of kidnapping and killing 7- year-old Danielle van Dam want to sequester the jury in the upcoming murder trial.
The motion, filed in a San Diego court yesterday on behalf of 50-year-old David Westerfield, will keep jurors isolated 24 hours a day for the duration of the trial. Prosecutors say they would oppose the move. Meanwhile, a Superior Court judge has ruled that certain documents related to the case will remain sealed for now.
The judge says the documents include Westerfield´s statements to police, potentially embarrassing information about Danielle´s parents and evidence prosecutors may use in the trial´s penalty phase. Westerfield, van Dam´s neighbor, has plead innocent to kidnapping, murder and child pornography charges.
