Fishing Vessel Suspected In Alien Case
The Navy and Coast Guard has halted a fishing vessel from Taiwan, suspected of smuggling ten illegal aliens who swam ashore in Orange County. The fishing vessel “Fuhsing,” which translates to “Lucky Star,” was stopped about 90 miles off the Southern California coast yesterday afternoon.
About 12 hours earlier at 3:30 a m, ten naked men swam ashore in Newport Beach and donned clothing they had brought with them in plastic bags. An off-duty lifeguard spotted the activity and notified law enforcement, and the ten were caught within a few hours.
Lieutenant Stephen LaLonde of the Coast Guard said that the fishing vessel suspected in the smuggling attempt was boarded by Coast Guard personnel. Chinese-fluent inspectors from the Immigration and Naturalization Service were en route to the fishing vessel during the night. Newport Beach Police said some of the ten men in their 20s and 30s captured in Newport Beach said they had been crossing the Pacific for about one month in two boats, before being dropped off close to shore about 45 miles south of Los Angeles.
