Sculpture Race Set In Ferndale
If you need something to do this weekend, how about taking in one of the wackiest events on the North Coast? The picturesque Victorian community of Ferndale is the setting for tomorrow´s annual World Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race. The bizarre, home-built human-powered gizmos hit the road at noon and will cover 38 miles over three days on the way to the finish line Monday.
Now in its 34th year, the race is being operated by the Humboldt Kinetic Association, which bought the competition from founder Hobart Brown last year. More than 30 racers are registered, but officials say as many as 40 may be on hand at the start. The event raises money for a variety of non-profit charities in the area.
