Death Toll Slightly Down So Far
There have been 16 traffic deaths reported in California during the first 36 hours of the long Memorial Day holiday weekend. The California Highway Patrol says that during the same period from 6 p-m Friday to 6 a-m Sunday in the holiday period a year ago, 17 traffic deaths occurred. Five of the people killed in crashes in C-H-P jurisdiction were not wearing safety restraints.
Drunk driving arrests during the 36-hour period statewide numbered 874, slightly higher than the 845 during the same holiday period last year.
