An Army National Guard CH47 Chinook helicopter, based in Stockton, crashed this afternoon into a field off Highway 4 by Milton Road (J14) just west of the Calaveras/Stanislaus County line on the Orvis Ranch 20-miles south of Stockton.
Capt. Denise Varner with the National Guard says the helicopter was on a routine training mission when it went down around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. The aircraft had a crew of two pilots and one flight engineer.Varner says none of the crew were injured.
The crash sparked a grass fire that was contained to two acres by area firefighters and a CDF helicopter.
A witness says the crash site looked to be about 100 yards from the Orvis Ranch home.
Varner says an accident investigation board is enroute to look into the cause of the crash.
