Yosemite Climber´s Death Investigated
Investigators are trying to figure out how a climber was killed during a rescue attempt on Yosemite Park´s Cathedral Rocks Thursday afternoon.
Climber Richard Zuccato of Texas died and Navy airman Jason Laird injuried when a cable snapped during the helicopter rescue attempt.
Park Rangers rappelled from a helicopter and gave first aid to the climber, who had fallen about 100 feet. Spokesman Scott Gediman says a larger Navy chopper was brought in to lift the patient. A cable snapped during the transport to El Capitan Meadow, but a safety line held.
When the aircraft landed the Zuccato was dead and a crewman injured. The Merced County Coroner´s office will determine the cause of death. The Airman Laird is in good condition at Doctors Hospital in Modesto.
