Tuolumne County Sheriffs deputies witnessed a man put a gun to his head and pull the trigger in a suicide Monday afternoon at the old truck scales on Highway 108 at Soulsbyville Road.

A Modesto man, who relatives say was suicidal, had driven to the Sonora area from Modesto, and was located by deputies around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon sitting in his vehicle at the old truck scales. He was reported as having a .357 magnum handgun in his possession.

Sheriffs department officials say as deputies tried to talk to the man, he lifted the weapon to his head and pulled the trigger.

The name of the man has not been released pending notification of family members.
