Cardinal Roger Mahony has read a letter to parishioners at his childhood parish in North Hollywood to apologize for the clergy sexual abuse scandal. The two-page letter was also read by priests at every parish in the archdiocese. Says Mahony: “I can assure you today that as far as is humanly possible to know, there is no priest serving in ministry in the archdiocese of Los Angeles who has abused a minor even one time.” Mahony leads the nation´s largest Roman Catholic archdiocese with 287 parishes. He returned from a summit of U.S. bishops in Dallas last week to announce reforms to the archdiocese´s misconduct review board. Dozens of priests remain under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department for suspected sexual abuse. Most of the cases involve allegations from years or decades ago.
