Local lawmakers have reacted with shock and anger to a federal appeals court ruling today that the Pledge of Allegiance is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion and cannot be recited in schools.
Sacramento atheist Michael Newdow brought the case because his second-grade daughter was required to recite it.
State Senator Dick Monteith of Modesto says the ruling is utterly deplorable, despicable and destructive.
Assemblyman Tim Leslie who represents Calaveras County says the liberals will only be satisfied when the name of God is chiseled off of every public monument.
Monteith says Wednesday´s ruling is a prime example why legislators need to move on President Bush´s judicial nominees.
