Mandatory evacuations are under way along Highway 138 because of the erratic brush fire burning in the Cajon Pass. The blaze skipped over the highway today, forcing residents to leave their homes near the scenic area known as Mormon Rocks.
The fire has charred nearly 68-hundred acres since it was sparked late yesterday afternoon by a car fire. Three homes have been destroyed. The fire shut down Interstate 15, the main artery between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, overnight, but it reopened this morning. About 50 fire trucks have taken up positions six miles east of the blaze around the town of Wrightwood to protect some two thousand homes. The fire is 15 percent contained.
