Governor Repeals License Law
Governor Schwarzenegger has delivered on his second major campaign pledge. He´s repealed a law that would have allowed undocumented immigrant drivers in California to begin applying for drivers´ licenses after January 1st. The signing comes on Schwarzenegger´s 17th day in office and follows his earlier action overturning the state´s car tax. The drivers´ license law would have allowed illegal immigrants to apply for licenses with taxpayer identification numbers instead of social security numbers. The governor´s action sets the stage for a fresh fight on the issue in January that could include making applicants undergo background checks.
