The Stanislaus County Sheriff´s Department Bomb Squad recovered and destroyed two sticks of dynamite in the Airport District around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. Sheriff´s officials believe that this was the last of the stolen dynamite that they had been looking for over the past week. The dynamite was between some unused railroad tracks behind the old Save Mart building on Yosemite Avenue.
Wednesday, at 11:45 p.m. the Bomb Squad recovered and detonated four sticks of dynamite and a block of TNT at Legion Park after being led there by an anonymous tip. “Some of the dynamite had already crystallized which makes it extremely volatile,” said Sheriff´s Sergeant John Hallford. “We couldn´t take the risk of trying to transport it, so we determined that it would be safer to detonate it in place.”
While out on an unrelated call Monday evening, a deputy came into contact with a man who told him where the remaining two sticks of dynamite were located. The bomb team was called out and they found the dynamite where the man said it would be. “The man told us that he had gotten the dynamite from Darrell Arnold and didn´t know what to do with it so he left it by the train tracks,” said Hallford. “We again determined that it would be safest to detonate these two sticks rather than attempt to move them.”
Darrell Arnold was arraigned last week on charges of possession of a destructive device in a public place and sale or transportation of a destructive device. Arnold was arrested after trying to sell the explosives in the Modesto area. He is being held at the Stanislaus County Jail on $30,000 bail.
