A group of Republicans active in the recall of Governor Gray Davis is now setting it sights on overturning a law granting drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.
Davis signed the controversial measure during the recall campaign.
Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger has promised to work to repeal the law. But the conservative California Republican Assembly is impatient. It launched a petition drive two weeks ago to put the matter before voters in the March election.
The group, which must collect 375,000 voter signatures by December 7th, says it has gathered nearly 40,000 so far.
Supporters of the law say it will increase highway safety by requiring illegal immigrants who drive anyway to pass tests and buy insurance. Critics say it increases the chances of terrorism by granting licenses to people who aren´t in this country legally.
