Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger´s win paves the way for an abrupt change of power in the Capitol and an unprecedented period of uncertainty in California. The new governor must move quickly to assemble a staff and immediately tackle the state´s fiscal crisis.
But before Schwarzenegger can be sworn in, the election must be certified, a process that by law can take a maximum of 39 days.
During the campaign, Schwarzenegger set out an aggressive plan for his first 100 days in office. It includes renegotiating state employee contracts, reforming the workers compensation system and repealing legislation that allowed undocumented immigrants to get a driver´s license.
