Governor Davis has formally conceded the recall election to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Davis told supporters in Los Angeles tonight that he had called Schwarzenegger to offer his congratulations and best wishes. He says his heart is full of gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve but voters decided it´s time for someone else.
He called on everyone in California to put the chaos and division of the recall behind them and do what´s right for the state. Davis says he´s pledged full cooperation with Schwarzenegger during the transition to let the new governor know what the challenges are and what the status of issues in Sacramento are. He also thanked voters for defeating Proposition 54, a ballot initiative that would have banned the tracking of racial data by state and local governments.
Opponents said it undercut antidiscrimination policies. As his wife and mother dabbed tears with tissues, Davis quipped that the stage was a no-crying zone, and they could cry later.
