Governor Davis says he will sue the federal Environmental Protection Protection Agency so it can´t interfere with California´s efforts to control greenhouse gases.
The announcement comes the week after Davis and governors from Washington state and Oregon laid out a plan to combat global warming. It responds to an August decision by the federal agency that it lacks authority to regulate vehicles´ greenhouse gases. It follows Davis´ signing of a law last year making California the first to restrict vehicles´ greenhouse gas emissions.
Davis announced the suit four days before Tuesday´s recall election in which he faces Arnold Schwarzenegger, who made the gas-guzzling Hummer famous.
The suit won´t be filed until later, to give other states time to join the lawsuit.
