The Area 12 Agency on Aging, which administers the senior meals program in Calaveras County, has opened an office in Angels Camp.
Area 12 manages senior meals and other programs for the elderly in Amador, Alpine, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne counties. It is run by a five-member board made up of one supervisor from each county. The Calaveras representative is Merita Callaway.
The new Angels Camp office will offer several services and has provided a description of them below:
The Linkages Case Management Program prevents premature or inappropriate institutionalization of frail, at risk elderly and functionally impaired adults, age 18 and older, by providing case management.
The Multi-purpose Senior Service Program (MSSP) provides services to frail older adults who are at risk of being placed in a nursing home. The purpose is to allow older adults to age safely in their home.
The Family Caregiver Support Program is federally funded and designed for an adult family member who is a primary caregiver caring for an elderly person age 60 and older. Area 12 provides assessment counseling, respite relief, and training and education for the caregiver.
Respite is also designed with the caregiver in mind offering a temporary relief of up to $400 or 20 hours a year for a family. It can help with individuals who recently came home from the hospital by sending a trained home health aid into the home to provide hands on care so the caregiver can leave home and know someone is there caring for the individual.
The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides assistance with Medicare and supplemental health questions. HICAP counselors can help develop a system to organize doctor and hospital bills, file Medicare and private insurance claims, prepare Medicare appeals or challenge claims denials, and clarify your rights as a health care consumer.
Information and assistance provides individuals with current information, assesses problems and capacities of individuals, links individuals with opportunities, and follows-up on referrals.
An information and assistance specialist will be on site to assist seniors with obtaining service. The staff has also been trained by the state to assist individuals with renter and homeowner assistance applications.
Counseling appointments can be made by calling (800) 510-2020 or 532-6272.
The Angels Camp office is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1201 S. Main St.. The Angels Camp office number is 736-1311 or 736-1411.
