A new Los Angeles Times poll shows California´s likely voters favoring the recall of Governor Gray Davis by a wide margin, with Arnold Schwarzenegger leading all replacement candidates.
Likely voters support the recall 56 to 42 percent. That´s a dramatic shift from the Times´ poll of September 12, when the spread was just 3 points.
If Davis is recalled, the poll shows 40 percent of likely voters backing Schwarzenegger, giving him an 8-point lead over Democratic Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante.
Earlier, replacement candidate Arianna Huffington said she´s withdrawing to concentrate on defeating the recall. Davis says Huffington could be of great help, as she plans to campaign statewide.
Schwarzenegger, who clashed repeatedly with Huffington in a recent debate, says he´s disappointed she´s out, and that she brought color and excitement to the race.
