A domestic violence call ended fatally in Modesto Friday night when a sheriff´s deputy killed a man who allegedly tried to take his partner´s gun. The man shot to death was 23-year-old Juan Hernandez Garcia.
Authorities say Stanislaus County deputy Steve Plante fired the fatal shots. He and partner Michael Toste will be put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
The deputies asked Garcia to step outside so they could check him for weapons. When officers noticed Garcia had a knife, they tried to handcuff him. Plante fired two shots when Garcia allegedly motioned for his partner´s gun as the two men struggled.
