Top Candidates Could Skip Debate to Protest Scripted Format

Aides say Arnold Schwarzenegger´s top two gubernatorial opponents plan to sign a letter threatening to boycott the one debate he´s going to attend unless organizers switch to an unscripted format.

Aides to Democratic Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante and Republican state Senator Tom McClintock say they agreed to jointly send a letter to the California Broadcasters Association asking for the format change. They say the letter will state that the candidates will not debate unless the CBA changes the format for next Wednesday´s forum, which involves giving candidates questions in advance. The candidates have, in fact, already seen the questions.

The move comes a day after Bustamante, McClintock, Independent Arianna Huffington and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo met for a debate in Los Angeles. That was the third debate Schwarzenegger skipped.
