Top State Elections Official Could Appeal Recall Delay
Secretary of State Kevin Shelley says he will announce today whether he will appeal the federal court ruling postponing the recall election. Meanwhile, Shelley told county elections officials to prepare for the October 7 election.
A three-judge appeals court panel yesterday postponed the recall, ruling that some votes would be cast on unreliable punch-card ballots. That´s the same system at the center of so much controversy after the last presidential election in Florida.
Governor Davis and Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, the only major Democrat vying to succeed Davis if he is recalled, and Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger have promised to continue campaigning as the courts decide when to hold the election.
