For the second time since last week´s debate, Green Party candidate Peter Camejo is criticizing California´s three strikes law.
Speaking to a small group in South Los Angeles, Camejo said it was a clear violation of the constitution and a law that “has been used in a racist manner against minorities.”
Camejo also criticized Governor Davis and the other gubernatorial candidates for remaining silent on the issue.
After hearing from a woman whose son was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for aiding and abetting a lookout on a $20 drug sale, Camejo said drug addiction is a social and health problem, not a criminal problem. He called harsh sentences for small offenses a “criminalization of poverty and criminalization of youth.”
