Recall Ballot Counting Has Begun
The first ballots are being cast in the California recall election.
Absentee voting started Monday in the election that will decide whether Governor Davis should be sent packing — and if so, who his replacement should be. Elections officials say as many as a third of the votes could be absentee ballots. The election is set for October seventh.
Conservative state Senator Tom McClintock took his campaign for governor to the airwaves today. The Northridge Republican once again vowed in a morning television appearance on KTVU in Oakland not to step down to make way for Republican front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But McClintock joined Schwarzenegger in attacking Davis for signing a bill to give driver´s licenses to illegal immigrants, and in attributing the move to politics. Davis signed the bill Friday after vetoing similar legislation last year.
