Four pedestrians have been hurt, one critically, after being struck by an out-of-control car on the Santa Cruz wharf. Police say the driver, 85-year-old Robert Schmidt, got behind the wheel of a car specially rigged with pedals for a handicapped driver yesterday, but was not used to the system and pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.
Schmidt accidentally accelerated into two would-be passengers, and then hit two more people as he backed up. He was not arrested.
Two victims, including a critically injured 92-year-old woman from Stockton, were taken by helicopter to a San Jose trauma center.
Witnesses say the wharf on the seaside city´s boardwalk was packed when the accident happened around 4 p.m.
