Bill Simon is leaving the race to recall California Governor Gray Davis. A campaign spokesman says Simon thinks “too many Republicans” are running to replace the Democrat.
Davis beat Simon last November.
The spokesman says Simon believes California “simply cannot risk a continuation of the Gray Davis legacy.”
Simon´s departure leaves three top Republicans among more than 130 candidates on the ballot in the October 7 vote. Front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger, former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth and state Senator Tom McClintock are the remaining Republicans.
