A state appeals court in Fresno has overturned a Modesto judge´s ruling to unseal search warrants and investigative documents in the Laci Peterson murder case.
The Fifth District Court of Appeals says that releasing the documents would prevent Scott Peterson from getting a fair trial in the killings of his wife and unborn son. The court also says that unsealing the papers could hinder any ongoing investigation in the case.
The ruling came after Peterson´s lawyer appealed a decision by a Stanislaus County Superior Court judge to unseal the documents last month.
A lawyer for a coalition of media organizations says no decision has been made whether to challenge the appeals court ruling at the state Supreme Court.
Peterson has pleaded innocent to two counts of murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.
